The Worst Part About Multistate Taxes

Every time I have to deal with state taxes, I get frustrated with the Postal Code state sorting mess. That means “Maine” comes before “Maryland,” which comes before “Massachusetts” when it’s all spelled out, but it’s reversed if you sort “ME,” “MD,” and “MA.”

With each department sending over data like our sort standards are the Wild West of Presentation, I have to do some extra sorting almost every time I get info on the states. No, not a life ending tragedy by any means, but an extra 5 minutes I’d rather spend playing Crossy Road

Out of curiosity, I decided to figure out how many states (including DC) would be out of order if we took all 51 and compared the sort by full name and the sort by State Abbreviations. I came up with the following results.

Nearly 50%. Terrible. It’s almost like the founders of each state didn’t know that Excel would become the greatest tool of the modern age.
